Sally's GAY with Midol

A 1957 ad that proclaims, "Sally's GAY with Midol."

I am old enough to remember when the word "gay" meant "happy." That was a long time ago. Take a look at this 1957 Midol ad that claims "Sally's GAY with Midol."

Midol has been around for a long time as well. While I imagine their formula has changed somewhat over the years, I am confident their advertising has as well. No one would say this today.

Most women at this time were blissfully unaware of any other usage of the word "gay," and it was a topic never discussed around our dinner table. In fact, the word "sex," even in the context of specifying gender, was not used in our home until I was at least in my late teens. Any and all information I got on the subject of sex came from anyone except my parents. What were they thinking?
